Doctor of Computer Science

1. Goal of Doctor Training Program

  • Doctoral training is the process of developing scientists who have a strong theoretical foundation and the necessary practical skills, as well as the independence, creativity, discovery, and problem-solving aptitude. has importance in science, technology, and the ability to direct research in science.
  • PhD candidates possess a solid methodology, extensive background knowledge, and the capacity to practically apply contemporary advancements in computer science to satisfy the high standards of society. High-level research and development, aptitude for management leadership, and active involvement in the advancement of science and technology are all required.

2. TRAINING PROGRAM VIEWPOINTS

The computer science doctoral training program emphasizes training in scientific research methods and habits, developing creative thinking in identifying and resolving professional problems, and is research-oriented under the direction of scientific of his or her instructors and specialized units in charge of management.

3. Thời gian đào tạo

  • Thực hiện theo điều 3 của quy chế đào tạo tiến sĩ ban hành kèm theo quyết định số 25/QĐ-ĐHCNTT-ĐTSĐH ngày 15 tháng 04 năm 2014 của Hiệu trưởng Trường Đại học Công nghệ Thông tin.

4. Training courses:

In accordance with Regulation 25, the training program is divided into three sections:

  • Part 1: Additional courses;
  • Part 2: Doctoral courses, doctoral topics and overview essays;
  • Part 3: Scientific research and doctoral thesis.

4.1 Additional courses:

Additional courses are available for PhD students who do not have a master’s degree or who have a master’s degree in a relevant courses. These modules help the PhD student have enough knowledge and expertise to carry out their duties.

PhD students who do not have a master’s degree must take additional basic and specialized courses in the current master’s program Computer Science, (not including Philosophy) to complete all the courses in the master’s degree courses in Computer Science.

PhD candidates who already hold master’s degrees in nearly all relevant fields after comparing to the their Master’s transcript, must complete all the basic and specialized modules of the Master of Science in Computer Science program. The list of additional subjects will be based on the current master’s program in Computer Science in the same course as the doctoral intake.

4.2 Doctoral courses:

The purpose of the doctoral level modules is to help students update new knowledge in the area of expertise; improve the level of theory, research methodology and the ability to apply important and essential scientific research methods of the research field.

4.3 Doctoral thesis:

Doctoral topics require the graduate student to update their own knowledge, have depth of specialization, breadth of related disciplines and are directly related to the PhD student’s topic, helping to improve scientific research capacity of researchers; help the PhD student solve some of the contents of the thesis topic.

Each PhD student must complete 03 doctoral essays (02 credits each). The PhD student must register to carry out essays in accordance with his/her research direction with the approval of the instructor and professional unit.

4.4 General doctoral essay:

In addition to doctoral essay,

The PhD student must write 01 general essay (overview essay) on the related situation and issues to the thesis topic. This general essay requires the researcher to demonstrate the ability to analyze and evaluate the research works, which are available from domestic and foreign authors, and closely related to the thesis topic. Moreover, his/her essay must state the outstanding problems, pointing out the problems that the thesis needs to focus on researching and solving.
The doctoral student conducts and reports an overview essay after completing his doctoral thesis and needs to successfully defend his overview essay before submitting his doctoral thesis.

5. Scientific research and doctoral thesis

5.1 Scientific research:

  • The PhD student must conduct scientific research as part of the development and implementation of the doctoral thesis. The PhD student compares the situation of scientific development in the direction of research within 12 months for those who already have a master’s degree or 24 months for those with only a university degree from the decision on PhD student recognition. In order to update and supplement the proposed research proposal, which is then evaluated by the Principal, a student applying for a PhD must conduct research.
  • Depending on the research field, specialized units have different standards for determining the current state of knowledge, technological solutions relevant to doctoral thesis topics, and standards for investigation and experimentation, to add missing data, to demand scientific inference, and to develop experiments and solutions that will allow the PhD student to learn new things and develop fresh approaches. For PhD students writing doctoral theses, these are crucial foundations.
  • The goals of the doctoral thesis must be consistent with the scope and content of scientific research. The university and the scientific advisor can help PhD students with funding, facilities, and laboratories to carry out the required research, depending on the nature of the thesis research topic. These PhD students are required to uphold Vietnamese and international intellectual property laws and guarantee the veracity, accuracy, and novelty of their scientific research findings.
  • The time for scientific research is arranged during the master’s training period. If, for objective or subjective reasons, the scientific research cannot be completed within the scheduled time, the researchers can apply for an extension of the research period. Expenses for long-term training are covered by the PhD student or supported by the sending unit if conditions permit.
  • The university and its specialized units create conditions for PhD students to lead or participate in the implementation of research projects and programs chaired by the university and related to the subject area of the doctoral thesis at all levels.

5.2 Doctoral thesis:

  • The doctoral thesis must be an original, accurate, honest, and creative scientific research work in the field of research with theoretical contributions, new knowledge or solutions that are valuable in developing, increase scientific knowledge of the field of research, or creatively solve problems posed with. It must also find new results, not overlap with other studies, and completely solve a scientific problem.
  • The doctoral thesis must not exceed 150 A4 pages (excluding appendices), of which more than 50% is the presentation of research results and arguments of the PhD student.
  • The thesis’ main content and findings must be: presented at specialized scientific conferences; published in at least two journal articles; presented at specialized scientific conferences with independent review; scored by the State Council for Professor Title; and listed in the list of scientific journals and conferences relevant to the doctoral training major, as specified in the lists in Appendix 2 of Regulation 25.
  • PhD students must defend their thesis in front of the specialized unit-level council and the University-level council according to regulations.
